If you are a military family,   you know that military families typically move every 3 to 4 years. But it could be even more often than that when you account for schools, special assignment or the large miscellaneous other category. These tips are designed to help you before you pack up everything and move across the country again!

1. How To Organize Boxes So You Know What Room They Go To

  • Use different colored tape for each room
  • Use the tape that’s labeled for each room (i.e. Kitchen, Bedroom 1, bedroom 2)

2. Put as many things as possible in Ziploc baggies

  • Silverware, spices, anything in the kitchen that will fit.
  • Socks, underwear, bathroom items to be packed together.
  • Especially toy sets. All small articles (and pieces of toy sets) that belong together will be together!
  • This saves A LOT of time when unpacking. You don’t have to wash things that were in bags and you don’t have to look for all the missing pieces because it is all together

3. Clothes Storage

  • Garbage Bag upside down over a grip of hanging clothes then tie the bottom.

4. Packing Up Tips (Do It Yourself)

  • Buy boxes that are all the same size. Makes packing a trailer super easy.
  • Paper plates between real plates are sufficient for across town moves and quick
  • Use soft things like towels and bedding to pack breakables so you use less packing paper.
  • Use the giant saran wrap rolls from U-Haul to wrap big pieces like couches

5. Disassemble

  • The more you disassemble furniture the less room it takes
  • Disassembled items will be less likely to be damaged.

6. Prep Work

  • Packing by type of item instead of room helps when downsizing when you unpack. (Frames, All decorative items, Toiletries, etc.)
  • If you have original boxes pack them before the moving company arrives. They will take your empty boxes and move them empty and pack up your equipment separately
  • Realize it will take longer to do prep work for a move than you plan. Make sure you start working on cleaning out/downsizing and organizing at least a month before you move

7. Use Up Items You Don’t Want to Move

  • About a month before you leave try to use up all the items in your pantry. Have no-spend weeks where you make creative meals with all the items in your freezer and pantry instead of throwing it away when you move.
  • Start purging early, don’t move stuff you don’t use or want

8. Open First Box

  • Organize kids things such that you have an “open first” box of items to help with the  transition
  • Organize a box of things you need to survive (i.e. Coffee maker, coffee cups, a few sets of silverware and plates, etc)

9. Use a Moving Company

  • Ask the moving company for a spare roll of their tape and a box.
  • You can pack some of the liquids they won’t pack, like shampoo, into Ziplocs and pack into the boxes and reseal. Makes it easier for when you load it into your car and you don’t have to throw it away. I don’t recommend this with super flammable things like lighter fluid, but can help
  • Move things that are important to you if possible.

10. Get Child Care

  • If you can get childcare for a few hours on Moving Day it will take away a lot of stress
  • If you are moving yourself, try to have regularly scheduled spaces of time where you can get stuff done. Either alternate with your spouse or have a friend or babysitter watch your kids.
